Rep. David Maloney of Berks County has raised concerns about voter disenfranchisement due to excessive wait times experienced during the November 5 elections. In a letter addressed to the Berks County Board of Elections, County Commissioners, and the Secretary of State, Maloney highlighted significant issues observed at three specific precincts.
Maloney reported that he "witnessed these long wait times" while visiting precincts in his district. He identified problems at Colebrookdale Township 1 located at Liberty Fire Company in New Berlinville, Richmond Township at the Richmond Township Building, and Maidencreek Township 3 at Keystone Villa Assisted Living in Blandon.
Voters informed Maloney of experiencing wait times extending up to four hours throughout election day at Colebrookdale Township 1. He expressed concern over the impact on voter turnout, stating that "long lines and wait times to vote resulted in fewer voters being able to cast a ballot."
Maloney emphasized that this issue is not new for Berks County's election management. "This is unacceptable," he stated, recalling a previous high-level resignation over similar election problems. He urged the county to address these recurring issues and improve their election management processes.
