WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) released a statement on May 30, 2024, regarding the conviction of former President Donald Trump.
Congressman Meuser stated, “The prosecution’s frivolous case against Donald Trump was a weaponization of our justice system and a blatant attempt to undermine democracy. They just convicted a former President of the United States in a trial where most people do not even know what crime was alleged. This trial never would have happened if Trump were not running for president. There was no crime committed, and the evidence, or lack thereof, in no way supported this verdict."
He continued, "The jury believed, and the case rested on, Michael Cohen, a convicted felon, liar, and self-admitted thief. District Attorney Alvin Bragg campaigned endlessly on getting Trump, and today, he lived up to his promise. Every progressive in the country is likely toasting right now, yet they have no idea the damage they have caused to our constitutional republic."
Meuser expressed concern over the involvement of the Biden Administration in the case: "Prosecuting political opponents happens in third-world countries, not in America, and it’s deeply troubling how involved the Biden White House has been in this case: in timing, with administration-linked prosecutors, and using the trial to go after their opponent rather than campaigning on policy. It’s a sad day in America."
He concluded by stating that adversaries around the world might view this as a failure of democracy and warned Americans about potential future implications: "Americans should take notice. If the Biden Administration can do this to a former president and the leading GOP candidate for President, Americans should ask ‘who’s next?’ The Left has succeeded in poisoning our Justice System," adding that Trump will appeal this conviction and believes he will win.
Meuser quoted Trump saying that "the real verdict will be delivered on November 5th.”
