Congressman Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania has cast his vote in favor of H.R. 27, known as the HALT Fentanyl Act. This legislation aims to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

Fentanyl overdoses have had a significant impact on communities nationwide, including those in Pennsylvania. In 2023, fentanyl was associated with 76% of the state's 4,721 overdose deaths. The proposed act seeks to make permanent an emergency order from the DEA issued in 2018 during President Trump's administration, which placed all fentanyl-related substances under strict federal control.

The current temporary scheduling is set to expire on March 31, 2025, unless Congress takes action.

"In 2023, a Pennsylvanian lost their life to a drug overdose every two hours," stated Congressman Meuser. "The HALT Fentanyl Act is a commonsense, bipartisan measure that ensures law enforcement has the necessary tools to go after traffickers while allowing researchers to better understand these lethal substances. The opioid crisis was exacerbated by the Biden Administration’s open border policies, and it is critical that the Senate act swiftly to pass this legislation and send it to President Trump’s desk."

The House passed the HALT Fentanyl Act with a vote of 312–108. It now awaits consideration by the Senate.
