Congressman Dan Meuser has expressed strong opposition to President Biden's decision to block the proposed U.S. Steel-Nippon Steel deal. In a statement, Meuser described the move as "politically motivated" and a significant setback for Pennsylvania and the American steel industry.
Meuser argued that President Biden's actions fail to differentiate between adversaries like China and allies such as Japan. He warned that this decision could jeopardize thousands of well-paying union jobs, halt essential investments in modernizing steel plants, and disrupt plans to create nearly 6,000 new jobs over the coming years. According to Meuser, this decision compromises Pennsylvania’s economic future for political reasons, leaving many families uncertain about their prospects.
The congressman highlighted that U.S. Steel is currently ranked as the 24th largest steel producer globally, while Nippon Steel holds the fourth position. The deal was intended to make U.S. Steel the largest steel producer in America with manufacturing operations based in Mon Valley and Western Pennsylvania. Nippon Steel had committed $2.7 billion towards modernizing facilities, which would have positioned the United States as a leader in global steel production through an overall investment of $14.9 billion.
Meuser emphasized that China produces about half of the world's steel, posing a threat to American industry competitiveness. He stated that ensuring American-made steel is crucial for supporting workers and national security.
He shared his interactions with local steelworkers who are concerned about their future due to this decision. Over 90% of Local Pennsylvania Steelworkers reportedly support the deal because it is vital for their jobs and communities.
Addressing claims of national security risks associated with the deal, Meuser dismissed them as unfounded, noting Nippon's commitment to relocate its North American headquarters to Pittsburgh.
Meuser expressed hope that former President Trump might intervene by reviewing this investment from a business perspective and potentially saving U.S. Steel while enhancing its prospects for America.
