WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) announced the successful allocation of $450,000 in federal funding for the replacement of the Walters Avenue Bridge in South Heidelberg Township. The funding, part of the FY24 Appropriations legislation, aims to address the critical infrastructure needs of the community.
The bridge, currently deemed "poor" by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and restricted to 15 tons, plays a vital role as a link between South Heidelberg Township and Wernersville Borough. Congressman Meuser highlighted the significance of the project, stating, "Its deteriorating condition has led to public safety and transportation concerns, which can now be addressed."
South Heidelberg Township Manager, Sean A. McKee, expressed gratitude for the support received, emphasizing the long-standing issues posed by the deteriorating bridge. McKee outlined the financial implications, noting that without the grant, the Township would face challenges in completing the project, potentially affecting taxes or project delays.
The community collaboration in securing the grant was also acknowledged, with McKee extending thanks to various local entities for their support in ensuring the replacement of the Walters Avenue Bridge. The project is expected to enhance transportation efficiency and safety for residents, addressing concerns such as weight restrictions limiting emergency response capabilities.
The allocated federal funds will facilitate the construction of a cost-effective, pre-cast concrete box culvert bridge, aiming to benefit the surrounding area and improve overall infrastructure.
