The status of a domesticated whitetail deer named “Baby,” seized from a Fayette County family in February, was the subject of a recent inquiry during the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s (PGC) annual report presentation before the House Game and Fisheries Committee. Republican chairman Representative David Maloney questioned PGC executive director Steve Smith regarding the animal’s current condition and whereabouts.

Smith did not confirm whether the deer continues to live and is in good health, a response that has raised concerns particularly because of a widely circulated video showing officers using a rope to remove the animal from its home.

“Mr. Smith told me that the deer was at a facility that is properly licensed to hold deer in captivity, but would not say if the deer was alive,” stated Maloney.

Compounding the issue, the PGC has declared that Baby will stay at the facility “permanently.” However, questions persist regarding whether the deer was truly wildlife or was born in captivity. The family maintains that they possess documentation and receipts indicating domestic origin.

“For the PGC’s part, they have offered no proof that the deer was ever a wild deer,” Maloney pointed out. “If they have such proof, other than a newspaper story, they should present it now.”

This matter continues to draw attention as the details of Baby’s situation remain unclear. Representative Maloney seeks additional information and transparency regarding the PGC’s handling of the case.
