The borough of Orwigsburg has secured a $125,000 state grant to facilitate the dredging of Fisher’s Dam. This announcement was made by Rep. Jamie Barton and Sen. David Argall.
“Fisher’s Dam offers wonderful recreational opportunities for the people of Orwigsburg and the surrounding areas,” said Barton. The grant, he noted, aims to increase the depth of the dam and protect the fishing experiences for local anglers.
Sen. Argall emphasized the value of the grant by saying, “This highly competitive funding will ensure that residents of all ages can continue to enjoy the opportunities for fishing, relaxing, and enjoying the natural beauty of our area created by Fisher’s Dam.”
Originally constructed in the 1970s, Fisher’s Dam has seen a reduction in depth from 15 feet to just 6 feet. Accumulated silt and sediment are the main issues, prompting a dredging plan that involves draining the dam, removing debris, and restoring the dam floor. This work will also serve the waterways connected to Mahannon Creek within the Schuylkill River Watershed, which is part of the larger Delaware River Watershed.
The Watershed Restoration Protection Program awarded the grant, funded by impact fees from natural gas drilling under Act 13 of 2012.
