Congressman Dan Meuser has sent a letter to the University of Pennsylvania's Interim President, J. Larry Jameson, expressing serious concerns over social media posts made by Assistant Professor Julia Alekseyeva from the university's English Department. The posts, which appear to praise Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, have caused significant backlash.
In his communication, Congressman Meuser highlighted Alekseyeva's remarks on social media where she described Mangione as “the icon we all need and deserve” and expressed pride in her position at UPenn. She was also recorded dancing while making these comments. Meuser criticized these actions as “outrageous and violat[ing] the basic ideals of a civilized society,” adding that Alekseyeva should be dismissed for her inappropriate behavior.
The congressman emphasized that this incident is part of a concerning trend at UPenn, citing previous antisemitic protests on campus. He questioned whether proper measures are in place to ensure faculty conduct aligns with the university's standards of excellence.
Meuser's letter included several inquiries directed at the university: whether a formal review has been initiated against Alekseyeva, if she was on campus when creating her posts, if university resources were used for these posts, and if there is any further evidence of violent rhetoric in her courses or among other faculty members.
Highlighting federal funding's role in UPenn’s operations, Meuser wrote: “Your response will dictate how my colleagues and I support allocating future federal funding for research at the University of Pennsylvania.” He noted that UPenn received $936 million in federal research grants last year.
The letter concluded with a request for answers by December 31, 2024, stressing the importance of integrity and accountability within the university community. Congressman Meuser remains committed to ensuring institutions uphold ethical standards.
