Rep. David Maloney has addressed concerns over the voting process in Berks County, citing significant delays experienced by voters during the November 5 election. In a letter sent to the Berks County Board of Elections, county commissioners, and the Secretary of State, Maloney highlighted unacceptable wait times at several precincts.
Maloney reported observing long lines firsthand while visiting precincts in his district. "I witnessed these long wait times as I traveled the district and spoke to folks at precincts," he stated. His investigation revealed notable issues at three specific locations: Colebrookdale Township 1 at Liberty Fire Company in New Berlinville, Richmond Township at the Richmond Township Building, and Maidencreek Township 3 at Keystone Villa Assisted Living in Blandon.
At Colebrookdale Township 1, voters reportedly faced wait times extending up to four hours throughout the day. Maloney expressed concern that such delays hindered voter turnout. "All three of these cases are of serious concern, as long lines and wait times to vote resulted in fewer voters being able to cast a ballot," he noted.
Maloney criticized the recurring problems with election management in Berks County. "This is unacceptable, and it is not the first time the Berks County Board of Elections has had problems," he remarked. He referenced past issues leading to a high-level resignation within the board and urged for improvements in handling elections.
The letter serves as a call for action to prevent similar issues from occurring in future elections.
