Greetings CT Families!
The Wilson School District is very excited to announce that CT students will begin the 2nd Grade Learn To Swim program in January! This program started in 2018 with Spring Ridge Elementary school and now enters the 3rd year of full district participation. You are invited to attend a brief information session on January 11, 2023, at 6:30 pm in Southern’s Cafeteria.
Second-grade students from CT will travel to the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium to participate in up to seven, 40-minute lessons. The lessons will begin on Jan. 17, 2023, and ends on March 2, 202. For your child’s safety, certified school personnel will remain with him/her throughout the changing process and during swimming instruction.
Why the second grade? Second grade is an ideal time for young people to take on new challenges, learn skills, build social skills, and develop self-confidence. 2nd Grade Learn To Swim students progress through a curriculum that incorporates the following five components:
Stroke Development: Students develop water competency through a system of stroke development that emphasizes floating, paddling, and treading skills.
Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information is the basis of an accident prevention system. Additionally, students learn survival, self-rescue, lifejacket, and boating safety techniques.
Rescue: To assist others in water safety emergencies, students learn safety techniques. The techniques include knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching assists, and throwing assists.
Personal Growth: Students develop self-esteem with the acquisition of new skills.
Water Games & Snorkeling: Small game and snorkeling activities are used to enhance basic skills.
