WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) has successfully secured $3,500,000 in federal funding for the Williamsport Levee Flood Control Project. The initiative aims to address the imminent threat of significant flooding in Williamsport's economic core. This funding, recently included in the FY24 Appropriations legislation, is a crucial step towards fortifying the region's flood control infrastructure.

The Williamsport Levee, safeguarding over $4.3 billion in economic assets along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, requires improvements in its pump stations, electrical systems, relief wells, cross pipes, and related infrastructure to mitigate flood risks. The area behind the levee accounts for a substantial portion of Lycoming County's economic activity, tax revenue, and workforce.

In response to the pressing need for enhancement, Williamsport plans to upgrade its levee system by bolstering pump stations, fortifying relief wells, and improving related infrastructure. These measures are essential to meet certification standards, as the current system falls short of compliance. Failure to obtain certification could lead to increased flood insurance premiums, adversely affecting local businesses and residents financially.

Expressing his satisfaction with the funding allocation, Congressman Dan Meuser stated, “I'm pleased to have secured $3.5 million for the City of Williamsport. This funding will be instrumental in mitigating the risk of catastrophic flooding, especially in Williamsport's economic hub. By directing these federal funds towards enhancing and fortifying Williamsport's flood control infrastructure, we're safeguarding the livelihoods of thousands of residents and businesses in the area.”

The Lycoming County Board of Commissioners also commended Congressman Meuser for his unwavering support of the Williamsport Levee Flood Control Project. They emphasized the critical role of the federal funding in ensuring the necessary improvements are made to maintain the levee's certification. The collaboration among stakeholders reflects a cohesive effort to address the region's aging infrastructure challenges, with Congressman Meuser playing a pivotal role in this collective endeavor.
